PEARLAND — For the second straight week, the Pearland Oilers dominated on offense, defense, and special teams -- from beginning to end -- as Sam Rayburn fell 50-0 at Pearland's homecoming.
After the arrival of head coach Tony Heath in 1997 - Pearland won their first homecoming game in 36 years in 1998. Now the Oilers have won 12 straight homecoming games.
Sam Rayburn won the opening toss and actually moved the ball pretty well before stalling at the Pearland 31.
The Oilers moved the ball to the Rayburn 20 before a pass interception gave the ball back to the Texans.
Three plays netted no yardage and the Oilers got the ball back on their own 10. This time it took only six plays to score as Dustin Garrison ripped off an 8-yard scoring run to give Pearland a 7-0 lead with 2:14 left in the opening quarter.
It was more of the same in the second quarter as Desmond King scored on a 12 yard run. Wide receiver Matt Rhodes caught a beautiful 25-yard scoring strike from QB Trey Anderson. Charles Ortiz was on the receiving end of another Anderson scoring toss covering 20 yards with 28 seconds left in the first half giving the Oilers a comfortable 28-0 halftime advantage.
Kicker Dylan Nowak opened up the scoring for the Oilers in the second half with a 31-yard field goal for a 31-0 lead.
Rayburn fumbled the ball in their end zone on their first possession of the second half that was recovered by defensive end Sam Ukwauchu. The extra point was mishandled on a bad snap leaving the Oilers ahead 37-0.
Pearland added two more touchdowns in the final frame as Jackie Robinson scored on a 3-yard run and Stanley Moody tacked on the final score with a 41-yard scoring dash. Fermin Sanchez added the extra point for the 50-0 win.
Pearland's offense rolled up 536 total yards and 25 first downs while the defense held the Texans to 105 total yards including only nine yards passing (2-of-14).
Garrison led the ground attack with 16 carries for 106 yards and one TD. Robinson had seven carries for 41 yards and a score. Moody had five totes for 61 yards and a TD.
Anderson hit 17-of-28 passing for 311 yards which set a new single-game PHS passing record. He had two scoring passes.
Myles Kanipes had seven catches for 155 yards while Ortiz had three grabs for 48 yards and one score and Rhodes had one catch for 25 yards and a TD.
Pearland's schedule stiffens this week as the Oilers travel to face La Porte on Friday, October 9 at 7:00 p.m. in a game that could decide the District 22-5A championship. The Bulldogs edged Deer Park 7-2 last week.
Pearland fans need to be at this game as La Porte is always a tough place to play.
