Friendswood clinches volleyball playoffs
It comes as no surprise that the Friendswood Lady Mustangs have clinched their place in the post-season and are certainly considered one of the favorites to challenge for the Class 4A Region III crown and a trip to the state volleyball tournament. Unless something really strange happens - the Lady 'Stangs have secured the District 24-4A title for this year with only three matches remaining.
Friendswood 3, Dawson 1
The Lady Mustangs dropped the opening game to the Dawson Lady Eagles, who look to make the playoffs this year for the first time in their young history, but head coach Jerry Linch saw his girls flex their muscles to sweep the final three games 20-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-9 to remain perfect in league action.
Annie Mitchem had 16 kills and seven blocks to lead No. 4 Friendswood (36-5, 11-0) past Dawson.
Siobhan O’Neill had 29 assists, while Kaelan O’Neill and Jasmine Casey each added 17 digs.
Camryn Kazmierski led Dawson with eight kills while Katie Haynie had 22 assists.
Dawson falls to 20-18 overall and 6-5 in district, but still in line for the fourth playoff spot in the post-season.
Friendswood 3, La Marque 0
The Lady Mustangs continued their perfect run through District 24-4A with a win over La Marque, 25-5, 25-9, 25-13.
Annie Mitchem and Jill Bergeson had eight kills each, while Maddie Landon added 17 assists for the Lady Mustangs (33-5, 10-0).
La Marque fell to 2-8 and 4-16.
Pearland secures playoff spot
Pearland head coach John Turner has his team's playoff spot reserved. Now - the only thing left is seeing whether the Lady Oilers can sweep their next three matches to repeat as District 22-5A champions. The only teams left on their schedule are South Houston, Deer Park, and Dobie. Pearland is 10-1 in district with their only loss coming at the hands of Deer Park. The Lady Deer have two losses in league play so the Lady O's can avenge the first round loss - sweep the board - and claim the title.
Pearland got two wins last week over La Porte and Pasadena Memorial in 3-0 sweeps to improve to 25-8 on the season.
The Lady Oilers will host Deer Park on Friday, October 23 in the district showdown.
Santa Fe 3, Manvel 0
Regina Trapp had a season-high 22 kills to lead Santa Fe to a playoff berth and a 25-15, 25-20, 25-8 sweep over Manvel.
Trapp also added five blocks. Katie Marabella (9 kills, 11 digs), Hayley Couch (7 kills, 15 digs) and Lindsey Martindale (19 assists) contributed for Santa Fe (32-5, 9-2).
Ali Sluismans and Cara Fisher each had six kills for Manvel. Sam Orta had 14 assists.
Manvel is now 17-14 overall and 7-4 in league play which leaves the Lady Mavs in third place behind Friendswood (11-0) and Santa Fe (9-2). Dawson (6-5) continues to hold on to the fourth and final playoff spot.
