Friendswood captures 24-4A crown
It came as no surprise that Friendswood secured the District 24-4A crown for this season. The No. 2 area-ranked Lady Mustangs are one of the favorites to capture the 4A Region III and make another familiar trip back to the state volleyball tournament.
Friendswood swept Manvel 3-0 as Jasmine Casey got 13 kills and 16 digs to keep Friendswood’s perfect District 24-4A record in tact. Siobhan O’Neill dished out 40 assists, and Sarrah Woolley added three blocks for the Lady Mustangs (36-5, 13-0).
The Lady 'Stangs closed out the season Tuesday night (late) against Angleton and should finish with a perfect 14-0 league record. Friendswood will get ready to begin the playoffs and make a run for the region crown to advance to state.
Pearland repeats as District 22-5A champions
Pearland head coach John Turner needed for his girls to beat Deer Park to avenge their only loss in league play in the first round. A win would give the Lady O's sole possession of the league title.
The Lady Oilers accepted the challenge and swept the Lady Deer 3-0 to repeat as 2009 district chamions and advance to the 5A playoffs.
Pearland swept the Lady Deer 25-19, 25-17, 25-23 as Malorie Pardo led the offensive attack with 18 kills.
The Lady O's faced Dobie on Tuesday (late) in the season finale and should take out the Lady Longhorns to finish with a 13-1 district mark.
Coach Turner hopes to see his girls make a deep run in the playoffs this season.
Dawson makes reservations for the playoffs
The Dawson Lady Eagles had to play an extra match against Texas City last year to have a shot at making the playoffs for the first time in their young history. The Lady Eagles dropped a heartbreaker to the Lady Stingarees and had to stay at home.
Head coach Lori McLaughlin vowed that her girls wouldn't have to go through that again to make the post-season in 2009 and her word became true as the Lady Eagles beat Manvel to clinch a first-ever volleyball playoff spot.
Dawson closed out the season against Angleton on Tuesday (late) but should have no problem knocking off the Lady Wildcats to finish with a 9-5 league mark to finish behind district champion Friendswood (14-0) and second-place Santa Fe (12-2). Manvel will finish as the other team to advance to the playoffs from District 24-4A.
Dawson swept Brazosport 25-15, 25-4, 25-13 as Grace Underwood led the offense with six kills while Katie Haynie had 17 assists.
