PEARLAND — After stumbling against Pasadena Memorial in their only district loss of the season, head coach Tony Heath saw his Oilers get back on the winning path with a solid 45-3 win over South Houston to improve to 4-1 in district and 6-2 overall.
The winning effort assured the Oilers they will be back in the playoffs for a record 10th straight year.
All eyes were also on the Pasadena Memorial - La Porte game last week as the Oilers need some help if they are going to have a shot at sharing the district title. Memorial beat La Porte to remain as the only team without a league loss. The Mavericks still must face Deer Park before they are home free with sole possession of the title.
Pearland travels to face Deer Park on Friday, October 30 at 7:00 p.m. at Abshier Stadium. The Oilers close out the regular season when they host Dobie on Friday, November 6 at 7:00 p.m. at The Rig.
The Oilers opened up the scoring against South Houston when quarterback Trey Anderson hit Myles Kanipes for a 9-yard scoring toss with 7:40 left in the first quarter. Dylan Nowak added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
Alex Deason put the Oilers on the scoreboard with 3:06 left in the opening period with a one-yard run for a 14-0 advantage.
Pearland continued to dominate the game as Kanipes got behind the Trojans' secondary for a 40-yard scoring bomb from Anderson and a 21-0 lead with 8:19 left in the second quarter.
Nowak finished up the first half scoring with a 36-yard field goal giving the Oilers a comfortable 24-0 halftime lead.
South Houston finally got on the scoreboard with a 36-yard Jorge Pineda field goal to cut the lead to 24-3 thanks to a turnover by the Oilers.
But it took less than two minutes for the Oilers to increase their lead as Kanipes gathered in his third TD pass from Anderson covering 15 yards for a 31-3 lead.
Jackie Robinson closed out the scoring for the Oilers with a pair of 10-yard scoring runs to post the 45-3 final score.
The Oilers rolled up 20 first downs and 417 total yards while the defense held the Trojans to only 137 total yards.
Robinson led the ground attack with 85 yards rushing on 12 carries for two touchdowns. Deason had 82 yards on seven totes and one score.
