PEARLAND — It should come as no surprise that the District 22-5A coaches selected junior Malorie Pardo and senior Marissa Collins as Co-MVPs after the pair helped lead the Pearland Lady Oilers to the 22-5A title and to the playoffs.
Collins has been named to the 2009 Texas Girls Coaches Association team and has been named to the 2009 TGCA East All-Star volleyball team. She also has been nominated to the Texas Sports Writers Association All-State teams what will be announced late this month.
Collins had 397 kills, 724 assists, 67 aces, 112 blocks, and 376 digs for the 2009 season.
"Marissa is a great floor general and she knows how to run an effective offense and was the key to our success this year," Turner said. "We will definitely miss her leadership and consistent play."
Pardo, who has already made a verbal commitment to LSU, has proven to be one of the top players that head coach John Turner has ever coached. She has also received other post-season honors including being named to the 2009 TGCA All-State team and has been nominated for All-State teams for the Texas Sports Writers Association.
"Malorie has been on varsity since she was a freshman, but has played with so much experience beyond her years," Turner said. "She is the most talented volleyball player that I have coached in my 25 years of coaching."
Pardo had 574 kills, 417 assists, 101 aces, 89 blocks, and 312 digs for the season.
"You always wonder when that gifted player will come along and make an impact on your program that will forever impact all others that follow -- Malorie is that player," Turner added.
Sophomore Kaylie Young was named as the All-District first-team Libero after registering 643 digs and 34 aces.
"Kaylie was the key to our offense this season," Turner said. "We knew if she was on and having her consistent game that we could run our fast tempo offense and beat top teams in the area. She led our team in digs and will play a big role over the next two years in our program."
Senior Carlee Lacy was named second-team All-District after posting 453 digs and 41 aces.
"Carlee led our team with her incredible defensive plays and her leadership as captain of the team," Turner said. "She gave 110 percent every time on the court and she always wanted to be the best at her position. She is a role model student-athlete. She is ranked No. 4 in her class and it shows in her work ethic."
Junior Madison Cabler was a second-team All-District pick with 157 kills, 298 digs, 25 aces, and 44 blocks.
"Madison was always pushing the envelope for a starting position at the first of the year," Turner said. "She made that jump in her level of play and became a solid outside hitter for us through district play. I'm looking for great things from her in 2010."
Junior Genny Turk was a second-team All-District selection with 135 kills and 141 blocks.
"Genny has turned into a great find for us in the middle," Turner said. "We asked her to step in and play middle and she worked herself to death to get to the level of play that would help this team become district champs! I saw the hunger in her eyes to make a difference on this team. She did just that!"
Freshman Autumn Taylor was named honorable mention All-District after she had 88 kills, 79 blocks, and 22 aces.
"Autumn started out on the JV and we brought her up at district," Turner said. "She just exploded and played incredible in the MB position. She is going to be a part of the future nucleus for the success of our program over the next three years."
Coach Turner was also honored as the 2009 "Coach of the Year" for District 22-5A. The Lady Oilers have made the playoffs 14 out of the past 16 years that Turner has been at the helm. The Lady O's finished this season with a sparkling 30-9 overall mark and 13-1 in district. Turner has over 500 career wins making him one of the eliteĀ volleyball coaches in the state.
