PEARLAND — The 2009 Pearland High School girls cross country team enjoyed a wonderful evening at Joe's Bar-B-Q in Alvin in celebration of a great season. Head coach Lori Ziegelmeyer expressed her appreciation for all the girls and the effort they gave this past year.
One of highlights was the fact that the Lady Oilers varsity team won all of their regular season cross country meets which totaled seven meets including six consecutive victories.
There were 43 individual medals won this season compared to 27 medals won in 2008.
Several girls received awards for their overall performance. The awards presented were:
Junior Varsity coach Brandy Woods presented the Junior Varsity Award that went to Abigail Gaddis and Kelly Simmons.
The Academic Award was presented to the varsity runner who had the highest grade point average. This award went to senior Brittany Crisp who is ranked 122 out of 614 seniors with a 3.5 grade point average.
The Oiler Pride Award represents the highest ideal of what it means to be a Pearland Lady Oiler and have Oiler pride. Three runners were honored and they were: freshman Kat Lee, sophomore Amanda Maniet, and freshman Jia LeBlanc.
The Fighting Heart Award is given to the cross country athlete who has that never-say-die spirit. Two runners shared this award. They were: sophomore Lucille Little and junior and team co-captain Courtney Mose.
The Allison Long Most Inspirational Award is named after a former Lady Oiler who was an outstanding runner at PHS. Long has returned to speak to the girls in recent years. The winners were: senior Brittany Crisp and sophomore Virginia Ney.
The "MVP" Award goes to the outstanding runner for 2009. The winner, for the second straight year, was sophomore Virginia Ney. She won three meets including the Pearland Invitational. She placed second twice, third three times, and one fourth place relay finish. Ney placed second at the District 22-5A meet earning team and individual Region III honors for the second straight year. She placed 29th out of 174 runners at a very competitive Region III meet.
Ziegelmeyer said goodbye to the seniors. Brittany Crisp and manager Sarah Elliott.
"I'm really excited about next season," Ziegelmeyer said. "I think we should be very strong and I hope the athletes that are coming back next year will run in the summer and report in good condition."
