PEARLAND, MANVEL —
Pearland Lady Oilers
The Pearland Lady Oilers hosted the Clear Lake Lady Falcons in an important district contest. Pearland head coach Donna Vacek is excited about her team this season.
"This may be the most talented group of girls I've had since 2002 when we made a deep run in the playoffs," Vacek said. "Actually, the girls haven't really discovered how good they are at this point in the season, but they are working hard."
Vacek figures that the four top teams in the district to make the playoffs includes Pearland, Clear Lake, Clear Brook, and Clear Creek. That is why the game against Clear Lake was important.
But the Lady O's imploded down the stretch allowing the Lady Falcons to take a 52-38 win to even their district record to 2-2.
Pearland jumped out to a 14-9 first quarter lead and held on for a 28-24 halftime lead, but the second half saw Clear Lake take advantage of numerous turnovers by the Lady Oilers that propelled them to the win.
"It is hard to believe that we had 55 turnovers in the game and still had a chance to win entering the fourth quarter," Vacek said.
Pearland led 36-34 after three quarters, but the turnover bug got Pearland as Clear Lake outscored the Lady O's 17-2 down the stretch.
Keara Hudnall led Pearland with 10 points while LaNeeta Guillory had six rebounds.
Pearland 46 - Dickinson 34
Pearland got back on the winning track with a 46-34 win over the Dickinson Lady Gators to improve their district record to 3-2.
Keara Hudnall led the Lady O's with 13 points while Kiara Freeman added 10. Johnasha Manning and LaNeetra Guillory both grabbed six rebounds.
Pearland led 26-12 at intermission. Dickinson battled back in the third quarter outscoring Pearland 17-10 to close within 36-29, but the Lady O's outscored the Lady Gators 10-5 down the stretch.
Pearland will travel to Brazoswood on Friday, Jan. 13 and then travel to Clear Brook on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 7:00 p.m. to begin the second round of district action.
Manvel 56, Friendswood 48
No. 9 state-ranked Manvel (22-1, 7-0) won a hard-fought district showdown with Friendswood 56-48 to remain undefeated in league play.
Friendswood came out strong in the opening period to take an 18-16 lead, but Manvel came out strong in the second period to outscore the Lady Mustangs 13-7 to take a 29-25 lead at intermission.
Both teams battled 11-11 in the third quarter before Manvel took the fourth period 16-12 for the eight point victory.
Manvel was led by Jordan Hosey who scored 20 points while Brianna Turner added 15.
Despite the loss, Jill Bergeson had 23 points for the Lady Mustangs, Skylar Murphy scored 11 points, and Caitlin Modesett added 10.
Dawson 55 - Ball High 39
The Dawson Lady Eagles remain in the playoff hunt this season with a 55-39 win over the Ball High Lady Tornadoes.
Dawson improved to 10-7 overall and 5-2 in district action.
The Lady Eagles outscored the Lady Tors 26-17 in the first half. But Ball High remained in the game with a 13-11 third quarter to close the gap to 37-30, but that is as close as Ball High would get as Dawson outscored the visitors 18-9 for the 55-39 win.
Domonique Criddle led the Lady Eagles with 18 points while Monica Gomes added 13 to lead the Dawson offense.
Dawson will travel to Santa Fe on Friday, Jan. 13 at 7:00 p.m. and then return home to host league-leading Manvel on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 7:00 p.m.
