Oilers lock up playoff spot
The Pearland Oilers knocked off South Houston last week to lock up third place in the District 22-5A race while La Porte and Deer Park are tied for first place with an 11-1 mark each.
The Oilers hosted Deer Park on Tuesday (late) and can play a role in who will win the league title. Pearland is still mathmatically in the title race, but would have to win their final two games and the top two teams would have to lose their final two game - which is very unlikely in District 22-5A.
Nonetheless, it appears that Pearland will grab the No. 3 seed in the opening round of the 5A Region III bi-district playoffs thought an opponent has not been named. Some think the Oilers could face North Shore in the opening round - a team they faced last year and lost on a last second shot at the buzzer.
The Oilers beat South Houston 48-41 as Marquis Sandles led the Oilers with 17 points while Alex Nobles added 10.
The game was close throughout the entire contest as Pearland took a 25-24 halftime lead into the dressing room.
The Oilers edged the Trojans 9-5 in the third period for a 34-29 advantage and then held on in the fourth frame 14-12 to post the 48-41 final.
Pearland 64 - Pasadena Memorial 33
The Oilers hosted Pasadena Memorial and completely dominated the game from start to finish in a 64-33 blowout.
Shai Fields and Alex Nobles scored 13 points each while Kevin Williams tossed in 10.
Dawson close to getting playoff spot
Dawson head coach Mark Barre has seen his roundballers stay in the playoff off the second half of district play and now the Eagles are in a position to advance to a first-ever spot in the post-season.
After finished 2-5 in district in the first half with three very close losses - Barre predicted that a 4-3 mark in the second half would put his team in the post-season. Dawson enters the final game of the season at 4-2.
The Eagles closed out Tuesday (late) against District 22-5A champion and No. 3 area-ranked La Marque. The Eagles lost to the Cougars in the first round on a shot at the buzzer.
Here is the scenario for Dawson to advance according to Barre.
"We are not secured yet," Barre said. "If Friendswood beats Angleton and Texas City beats Santa Fe on Tuesday, then we are fourth for sure. If Texas City loses to Santa Fe and Manvel beats Brazosport, then there is a three-way tie for the last two playoff spots, and we will have to have a playoff scenario this Friday and Saturday."
The Eagles have positioned themselves to advance and the likely scenario will be what Barre described to avoid a three-team playoff.
