PEARLAND — When you are the pre-season No. 1 ranked team in the state, there is a big target on your back every time you take the field. Such is the case with the Pearland Lady Oilers softball team who are the defending Class 5A Region III champions. The Lady O's advanced to the state finals last season only to lose a 1-0 heartbreaker to Smithson Valley to finish with a school-record 37-7-1 mark.
"We know we are going to have a target on our backs every time we take the field," head coach Laneigh Clark said. "We aren't going to be able to sneak up on anyone this season. We have been preaching to our girls they need to stay focused and take each game one at a time."
The Lady O's have accepted the early season challenge to post a 7-0 mark to begin the season.
Pearland opened up the 2010 softball season with a 6-0 win over Clear Brook. Junior pitcher Brooke DuBois pitched all seven innings with three strikeouts to pick up the victory. All-American catcher Brittany Marcet went 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBIs.
The Lady Oilers participated in the annual Brenham Tournament where many of the state's top team show up to face some tough competition.
Pearland returned home with six more victories as the Lady O's knocked off San Marcos (7-1), Port Neches-Groves (10-7), Lamar (3-2), Leander (8-0), San Antonio O'Connor (4-2), and Cedar Park (2-0).
Brooke DuBois picked up five of the wins while Haley Beam (1-0) picked up the other victory. DuBois is now 6-0 on the season.
Leading hitters for the six-game tournament included Lauren Langner, Chelsea Bennett, Jaclyn Bechtle, Brittany Marcet, Megan Coronado, and Sara Clements.
The Lady Oilers will participate in another tournament this weekend in Pearland with some talented teams on the schedule.
