Pearland takes care of business against SB Memorial

PEARLAND — It was business a usual as the Pearland Oilers traveled to Tully Stadium and handed the Spring Branch Memorial Mustangs (0-2) a 29-7 loss to improve their season record to 2-0.

Pearland opened up the scoring when junior running back Davier Pinkston burned the Memorial defense for a 65-yard scoring jaunt with 7:09 left in the first quarter. QB Jacob Whitehead scored the two-point conversion giving the Oilers an 8-0 lead.

Jonathan White added to the Oilers lead with a 21-yard scoring burst at the 1:50 second quarter mark. Cody Bernstein booted the PAT and the lead was 15-0.

But Memorial struck just before the end of the first half on a 38-yard scoring pass from Colton Taylor to Tori Ellison with 10 seconds showing on the clock to cut the lead to 15-7.

But that would be all the scoring for Memorial as the Pearland defense shut down the Mustangs in the second half while scoring two more times for the 29-7 non-district victory.

QB Connor Blumrick hooked up with WR Cody Williams on a 30-yard scoring strike for a 22-7 lead with 7:03 left in the third.

With 3:01 remaining in the game, Brady Basso was on the receiving end of a 44-yard scoring pass from Whitehead to make the final score 29-7.

Blumrick finished the game hitting 6-of-17 passing for 74 yards and one TD while Whitehead was 1-of-3 for 44 yards and a score.

Pinkston had 105 yards on 15 carries for one score while White had four carries for 30 yards and a score.

Williams had three catches for 50 yards and one score while Basso had one grab for 44 yards and a TD.

Pearland will open up District 22-6A action on Friday, September 11 at The Rig against the Dobie Longhorns and former offensive coordinator Mike Norman who took over the head coaching duties for Dobie this summer. Game time is at 7:00 p.m.
