PASADENA — The Pearland Oilers (8-2, 6-1) needed a win over the Dobie Longhorns to claim a share of the District 22-5A crown after Deer Park knocked of Pasadena Memorial (8,2, 6-1) 16-3 to hand the Mavericks their only loss in district play.
The Oilers will now get ready for the bi-district round of the Class 5A Region III Division I playoffs. As the top seed in Division I - Pearland finds themselves facing North Shore who, for the first time in nine years, failed to win the district championship. The Mustangs come into the game with a 7-3 mark.
The two teams have faced one another six times with North Shore claiming five of those games. In 2006 - the Oilers shocked the Mustangs 21-14 at Reliant Stadium on their way to the Region III crown and the state semifinals where they lost a heartbreaker to Austin Westlake 35-32 at Texas A&M.
Pearland will need to play their best game of the year at this stage of the season and getting by North Shore won't be an easy task. The Mustangs lost last week to Beaumont West Brook 35-25 in a battle for the league title. North Shore also lost to Katy and Port Arthur Memorial. The game at Memorial was played in almost unplayable muddy conditions with the final score 7-6.
The game against Dobie only served as a warm up game as the Oilers outgained the Longhorns 624 total yards to 88 total yards. Dobie had 79 yards in the first half as Pearland's defense totally dismantled the 'Horns offense int he second half.
It took a little while for the Oilers to get untracked, but once they did, the game was well in hand by the end of the third quarter.
Junior running back Dustin Garrision (19 -118 yards) scored the first three touchdowns for Pearland on runs of 7, 6, and 8 yards giving the Oilers a 21-0 lead with 9:08 left in the third period.
Pearland led 14-0 at intermission.
Myles Kanipes made a great catch from quarterback Trey Anderson to complete a 32-yard scoring toss to make the score 28-0.
Sophomore running back Jackie Robinson added another score on a 21-yard run with 8:18 left in the final period to increase the lead to 35-0.
Juan Trujillo capped the scoring late in the fourth frame on a 1-yard run to post the final 42-0 score.
Anderson was 14-of-22 passing for 307 yards while Robinson had 14 carries for 126 yards and one score. Kanipes had two catches for 73 yards while Charles Plaster had two grabs for 46 yards. Sam Ukwauchu had two catches for 58 yards. Desmond King had two catches for 18 yards. Matt Rhodes added two grabs for 56 yards. Garrison had one catch for 18 yards as Anderson spread out the passing wealth.
Alex Deason added 38 yards rushing on five carries.
Pearland will be the home team against North Shore at Deer Park's Abshier Stadium on Friday, November 13 at 7:00 p.m. Pearland fans need to get out and support the Oilers in a game that will no doubt be another classic battle between these two teams.
