PEARLAND — The Pearland Pirates beat Friendswood by 90 points to claim the 2009 Clear Creek Swim League championship. Several Pirate swimmers won the overall high points total for their age groups at the Champ meet. They included: Nikko Bjontegard (girls 9-10), Catherine Wu (girls 11-12), and Bofeng Chen, boys (13-14 - tie).
The Pearland Pirates summer league swim team won the CCSL Championship on Saturday, June 24. The Clear Creek swimming league is comprised of 20 teams from in and around the east side of Houston such as Pearland, Baytown , Friendswood, Clear Lake and several others. Teams range in size from about 100 to over 300 swimmers which includes boys and girls from ages 6-18. Swimmers of all ages participate in all of the individual swim strokes as well as relays.
In 2008 - under the guidance of head coach Blake Henry and assistant coaches Lauren Partridge and Chris Coker the Pirates began to win. The 2009 season brought even further improvement. Coach Blake and coach Lauren returned and were joined by coach Matt Winton who is the new Dawson High School swimming and water polo coach. They were assisted, as they are every year, by the Junior Coaching Staff. These are unpaid high school students that volunteer up to 17 hours a week for 9 weeks to help with practices and meets.
The Junior coaches include: Vanessa Alejandro, Philip Bich, Ashley Gao, Allison Hall, Heather Leaverton, Ellen Shaw, Priyanka Tripuraneni, and Clair Zhang.
