Coming off a 40-6 season that included a District 22-6A championship and a run to the Division I Region 3 semifinals, Pearland will blend new and returning players in an attempt to return to that level.

The Lady Oilers graduated nine seniors, including their starting setter and libero. A host of newcomers are competing to fill those roles.

"Every aspect of the game that we lost, I'm confident with what we are filling them with," Pearland coach Jamie Gill said. "The girls that I have are super hungry to compete. To carry over that success is pretty natural to them. They laid a foundation and expectations are high."

Gill is particularly excited about her defense.

Lilyana Ulloa, Julie Reyes, Brooklyn Hampton, Emily Gallegos and Callie Trigg are competing to fill back row spots. A libero will be chosen from that group, with Gill open to choosing more than one.

The Lady Oilers have three setters capable of running Gill's 6-2 offense.

Leading the group is senior Emma Garza, with Camden Stevens and freshman Brelyn Wolford also in the mix.

Pearland's most experienced group are its front row attackers.

Britney Solomon and Aaryn Brown are returning starters, with Katy Cavanaugh, Emma Dines and Arie Glover also seeing significant court time.

Jenna Mizell and Liryn Davis were brought up toward the end of the season to fill in for injured regulars.

"I truly think we have a little bit of everything," Gill said. "We have the ability to spread our offense. I'm excited to see what we are capable of doing."

Blending experienced players with varsity newcomers can be a perilous task. Gill hopes to avoid that obstacle with a tight knit group that she describes as "super competitive." "(Returning players) set the example for what being in the gym every day looks like," Gill said. "That sets the tone itself. This group loves volleyball and loves to compete. They do not like to lose.

It's been very fun to watch them competing against each other.
