HOUSTON — The Manvel Lady Mavericks had a very successful softball season and head coach Christa Williams was hoping to see her girls go a little further in the 4A Region III playoffs.
Unfortunately -- the Lady Mavs played two close games against Houston Waltrip, but the Lady Rams were able to get the key hits to sweep Manvel in their best-of-three series 1-0 and 4-1.
Waltrip senior pitcher Anne Marie Taylor pitched both games to register the wins. The lefthander gave up seven hits and no runs in the first game and then came back in the second to allow only five hits and one run in the second game.
Manvel had two great scoring opportunities when Madison Staton laced a one-out double and then advanced to third, but no one could get the clutch hit to bring her home. In the third inning, Krissie Fountain opened with a triple, but was stranded as Taylor kept the ball in the infield for two pop ups and one ground out to end the scoring threat.
The lone run for Waltrip came in the fifth when Manvel pitcher Beth Dietrich walked Ashley Herrera. A wild pitch sent the runner to second and a sacrifice bunt moved Herrera to third. A bloop single by Toni Gonzales plated Herrera for the only run of the game giving Waltrip the 1-0 win.
Waltrip 4 - Manvel 1 ... Manvel scoring the first run of the second game as Kesey Allender singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a single by Dietrich.
Manvel got a couple of runners on base in the seventh inning, but Taylor was able to keep the ball from going out of the infield to shut the door for the win.
Waltrip advances to the regional quarterfinals against Brazosport.
