Pearland's bid to repeat comes up short

The game against Hightower didn't turn out as hoped for, but the Oilers certainly played all 48 minutes despite falling 35-14. Even in the final two minutes, Pearland was knocking on the door to score.

John Paul Stevens High School in San Antonio opened in 2005. The namesake, recently retired from the Supreme Court, was appointed by President Gerald Ford in 1975. Justice Stevens authored the majority opinion in 2001 that provided for equal access for disabled athletes, specifically allowing a disabled golfer to use a cart during PGA competitions (PGA v Martin). Justice Stevens is highly respected for his integrity, honesty and impartiality.
SA Stevens Falcons head football coach is Lee Bridges. He accepted the position after serving as the head coach at San Antonio Taft. Bridges was the Taft head coach when they defeated Pearland in the 2001 5A Division I state semifinals in the Astrodome. Bridges and Pearland head coach Tony Heath will face one another again after 10 years.

It was reported in the July 15 issue of the Pearland Reporter News that the Pearland Oilers finished in fourth place at the 7-on-7 state tournament. Actually - the Oilers were in the consolation round while 32 other teams advanced to the championship round from the four-team pool play. While the Oilers advanced to the consolation finals where they lost to Stratford -- they actually finished 34th out of the 64 total teams and not fourth overall.

Seth Dornak held the Falcons to four hits while the Oilers pounded out 10 hits including a HR by Drew Dekerlegand. Pearland advances to the 5A Region III semifinals and will play the winner of the Atascosita/Katy series which is tied 1-1.
SOFTBALL, 5A Region III Semifinals — Pearland vs. Bellaire — Game 2: Bellaire 5 - Pearland Lady Oilers 3. The Lady Oilers held a 2-1 lead for most of the game until Bellaire picked up four runs in the top of the fifth for a 5-2 lead. The no-quit Lady O's scored one run in the bottom of the seventh, but the rally was cut short leaving the teams tied at 1-1 in their best-of-three series. The third and final game will be played on Saturday, May 23 at Manvel HS at 7:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to the 5A Region III finals.
