MANVEL — There were a lot of questions for the Manvel Mavericks entering the 2013 football season, especially on offense after head coach Kirk Martin lost most of his skill people including over 4,100 yards and 55 TDs from a Div. I quarterback and four D-I receivers.
The Mavs came out of the blocks a little slow to begin the 2013 football campaign, but that was to be expected.
When Martin began the football program at Manvel in 2006, there was a pattern of having duel quarterbacks, but that vanished in 2012 when Martin settled in on one field-general.
Now, having to start over again, it seems that Martin has two quarterbacks who are vying for playing time and they both got to see a lot of action against Spring. It seems that Martin may be back to playing two signal-callers at the beginning of the season to see if that will be the pattern or if only one takes control of the offense.
The game was close in the opening half as Manvel managed to score only once in the first quarter on a 7-yard run by Jamond Manuel for a 6-0 lead after the PAT missed the mark with 2:12 left in the opening quarter.
With 5:60 left before halftime, Manvel scored again on a 6-yard run by Deriq King. Julius Montano booted the extra point giving the Mavs a 13-0 advantage.
But Spring wasn't going to go down easy as they scored with 14 seconds left before intermission as QB Darius Campbell-Lee hit Mason Aguilar on a 9-yard scoring toss. The PAT was no good leaving the score at 13-6.
Spring came out with some determination to begin the second half as Campbell-Lee hooked up with Aguilar again to complete a 44-yard scoring bomb. The extra point was no good as the Lions cut the score to 13-12 with 8:44 left in the third stanza.
But Manvel would gather the troups together to outscore the visitors 20-0 down the stretch for the 33-12 victory.
Reggie Hemphill gathered in a pass from Stefan Kahn for one score while King score his second touchdown of the game on a 6-yard run. Manuel and Kahn hooked up for a 25-yard scoring strike with 4:33 left in the game to put the contest out of reach making the final score 33-12.
Kahn and King shared the quarterback duties as Kahn hit 13-of-22 passing for 192 yards and two TDs. King hit 10-of-15 for 113 yards. King also had 11 carries for 68 yards and two scores.
Qyalan Clay had 21 totes for 66 yards. Hemphill had 5 catches for 67 yards and one TD while Manuel had five grabs for 79 yards and one score.
The Mavs had 492 total yards while the defense held Spring to 247 yards.
